RealVisXL Explained: Features, History, and What Comes Next
RealVisXL is an AI checkpoint that turns text into photo-like pictures.
It is built on Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL). You write a prompt. The model tries to draw what you asked for.
This article answers three easy questions:
- What is special about RealVisXL?
- How did it grow over time?
- What might happen next?
We only use facts from public model pages (Hugging Face and Civitai). We do not invent a secret roadmap.
What is RealVisXL?
Think of RealVisXL as a drawing student that practiced hard at making photographs with an SDXL base.
- Author: SG161222 (Hugging Face shows the name Evgeny; Civitai shows SG_161222)
- Job: text-to-image, photorealism
- Type: SDXL Checkpoint Merge (Civitai)
- Size class: about 3B parameters on Hugging Face cards
- License: openrail++ / CreativeML Open RAIL++-M
- Main Civitai page: model 139562 (RealVisXL V5.0)
- Main HF card for latest standard build:
SG161222/RealVisXL_V5.0
The author also maintains a Hugging Face collection called “RealVisXL (SDXL)”. It lists many versions (standard, Lightning/Turbo, older releases) in one place.
You can use RealVisXL for things like:
- realistic portraits and fashion-style shots
- photo-like scenes and details
- local tools such as ComfyUI, Forge, or Automatic1111
- quick browser demos on third-party Hugging Face Spaces
Features: what makes RealVisXL special?
1. Photorealism is the main goal
Official cards say RealVisXL aims at photorealism. They also say it can make decent quality images for both SFW and NSFW use. Always follow the model license and the laws where you live.
2. It is a merge, not a mystery closed model
On Civitai, RealVisXL is labeled a Checkpoint Merge. The author thanks merge work that used:
- ProtoVision XL
- DynaVision XL
(both credited to socalguitarist on public pages)
That does not mean every training detail is public. Full mix recipes and data lists are not fully published as a single open recipe.
3. Two speeds: quality builds and Lightning/Turbo builds
The series often ships:
- Standard / BakedVAE versions for higher quality sampling
- Lightning or Turbo versions for few steps and low CFG
That helps both careful final renders and fast experiments.
4. Clip Skip 1 on the modern mainline
Civitai usage tips for the current mainline list Clip Skip 1. That is different from some other community families that default to Clip Skip 2. Always check the card for the exact version you download.
5. Easy public downloads
You can get files from:
- Hugging Face under the SG161222 account
- Civitai model 139562
Those pages also show sample images, recommended settings, and version notes.
History: how versions grew
Here is a simple timeline from public sources. Some middle versions have less public bullet text than others.
V1.0 (BakedVAE) — 2023-09-03
Early beta-style release on Civitai. This is where the RealVisXL SDXL line becomes easy to point to as a product name.
V3.0 (BakedVAE) — 2023-12-20
Public notes say overall quality and detail went up. Artifacts and distortion went down. Faces improved; hands may have improved too.
V3.0 Turbo — around 2023-12
A faster variant of V3.0. Public tips talk about about 4+ steps, DPM++ SDE Karras, and CFG about 1.5–3.
V4.0 (BakedVAE) — 2024-02-15
Public notes say anatomy improved a bit, overall quality improved, and detail increased.
V4.0 Lightning — 2024-02-26
Based on V4.0. Notes say it is less noisy than V3.0 Turbo for few-step use. Typical tips: about 4–6 steps, low CFG.
V5.0 and V5.0 Lightning — 2024-08-31 / early September 2024
These are the current mainline releases in the official RealVisXL collection. V5.0 is the standard quality build. V5.0 Lightning is the few-step sibling.
Important honesty check: public main sources do not show a RealVisXL V6 release or a published V5→V6 training diary.
Future: what public sources actually say
This part must stay honest.
What we know
- The official Hugging Face collection for RealVisXL (SDXL) currently centers on V5.0 / V5.0 Lightning and earlier RealVisXL entries.
- We did not find an official public roadmap that promises “RealVisXL V6 on date X.”
- There is no public RealVisXL V6 announcement on the main cards we checked. We do not invent release dates.
What we should not invent
We will not claim:
- a secret V6 date
- official scoreboards vs Juggernaut / epiCRealism / CyberRealistic (the author did not publish that kind of table on the main cards we checked)
- that RealVisXL is the same product as Realistic Vision V6 (that is a different SD1.5-era line name)
What the author works on beyond this line
Public author pages also show other series such as RealVis (SD3.5), RealFlux, and Verus Vision, plus promotions for other models on third-party platforms. That tells us the author keeps shipping new work. It does not tell us the exact next RealVisXL SDXL version.
Safe takeaway: for production work today, treat V5.0 as the latest clear RealVisXL SDXL mainline, and re-check the author’s HF collection / Civitai page before major projects.
How this site helps you try it
On this website you can:
- read guides like this one
- open /playground and switch between:
- a RealVisXL 5.0 third-party Space
- a RealVisXL v4 & v3 third-party Space
Those Spaces are not hosted by us. Queues, uptime, and exact loaded weights can change upstream.
Quick starter tips
- Download the version you want from Hugging Face or Civitai.
- For standard V5.0, start with DPM++ SDE Karras (30+ steps) or DPM++ 2M Karras (50+ steps).
- For Lightning, start with about 4–6 steps and CFG 1–2.
- Read the model license before commercial use.
- Use the playground only when you are okay with third-party processing of prompts.
